Advice and rules for travelling with pets
-
By car
Article 169 of the Traffic Code establishes precise rules if you are travelling by car with your dog.
If the dog is alone, you have to make sure that it does not disturb the driver. It is advisable to keep it tied to the rear safety belt through a special snap-hook to be tied to the leash or to the kennel in the case of a cat. If you have two pets, they must absolutely travel in the special kennels or cages or in the rear compartment by using nets or specific partitions approved by the motor vehicle licensing agency. Always remember to provide your 4-legged friend with ventilation and hydration and, in the event of long journeys, plan for several stops to let him walk.

By train
Trenitalia: in all train categories pets can be carried in containers having the following size: 70x30x50. An extra charge is applied if you travel in a sleeper, couchette compartment or Excelsior coach. Big-size dogs can travel on high speed trains, Frecce and intercity trains provided they are leashed and muzzled. Remember that your dog pays a 50% reduced ticket. You are always required to bring your dog’s health card and birth certificate with you.
